excerpt:

Oh no!
One mitten.
Two hands.
Lost-mitten tears.

Mittens to Share, with simple prose, tells the story of a young girl who plays in the snow and then tragically loses one of her mittens. The story opens with an invitation to the vastness of a snowy world: “Look up” (p. 2); and the reader's attention is brought to a tiny bird on a telephone wire. “Look down” (p. 3) it next says, and the reader has the advantage of looking at the child from the bird's view. A snow adventure transpires, and a mitten is lost. The girl returns to her home to search for new mittens that she can use in the wondrous outdoors. Once back outside, she discovers a delightful surprise.

internal art     Luxbacher's illustrations are soft and detailed, adding richness to the simple prose. The snow is soft and blended throughout the pages, contrasting sharply with the details of the leaves on the trees. The gentle outdoor colours are then juxtaposed against vibrant pinks, oranges, yellows and blues as the girl enters the house to search for a new pair of mittens. Though the prose lacks a steady flow throughout parts of the story, the illustrations never falter.

internal art     Sher's Mittens to Share is an ideal book to read on a cosy winter's night. The quaint story and beautiful illustrations are sure to please any young reader, and an unexpected surprise at the end makes for a delightful read for adults as well.

Recommended.

Nikita Griffioen is completing her high school English teacher certification, and she hopes to write and illustrate books of her own.
