Parts Work Together
Parts Work Together
Parts of a Bicycle
A bicycle is a technology. It makes it easier and more fun to get from place to place.
A bicycle has a system of many parts. Together, they make the bicycle work.
Crabtree Publishing has added another group of four books to its “Full STEAM Ahead” series. The new group, “Technology Time”, includes the titles Parts Work Together, Technology and You!, Technology Then and Now, and What is Technology?.
Like other books in the series, Parts Work Together is packed with colourful photos and limited text. The format of the book is very visually appealing.
The focus of Parts Work Together is to illustrate that many technologies have parts that work together to make life easier, safer, and more fun. The parts of a bicycle are used to help young students understand this concept.
Activities at the end of the book, in “STEAM Notes for Educators”, provide several activities for students to work alone and in pairs to apply and extend their understanding of how parts of technologies work together. Worksheets to support the activities are found at www.crabtreebooks.com/resources/printables. These worksheets help students build a growth mindset.
Have children pair up. They should switch their technologies and the accompanying Made of Parts Worksheet with their partner. Then, each child fills in the Prediction Sheet based on their partner’s technology.
Before, during, and after reading prompts are included on the verso of the Table of Contents page. Also included are “Words to Know” and a short Index at the back of the book.
Whether purchased individually or as a part of the set, Parts Work Together seems well-written and illustrated to engage young learners in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math).
