School Rules!
School Rules!
On Friday, when the bell rang and school was done, Cassandra hid underneath her desk and did not go home even when all the other kids got dressed and left. …Cassandra hid underneath her desk and did not go home even when the slightly scary principal turned off all the lights and locked the front door. Then Cassandra finally got out from underneath her desk, turned on the lights, and pulled out all her favourite stuff.
Cassandra’s parents freak out when they realize she’s not at supper, and, after searching all over, Cassandra’s dad finally sees her when he looks through the school window. He climbs in and brings her home despite Cassandra’s repeated pleas that she wants to be at school. On Saturday, Cassandra gets ready for school. But there is no school on Saturdays! The parents try to convince her not to go to school, but she rides her bike anyways only to find the school is closed. What then? Maybe the Everything Store can deliver a school to her backyard! And sure enough they do.
School Rules! is a silly tale about a child that loves going to school; Cassandra just can’t get enough of it. The story is short and sweet and has the shouting scenes typical of many Munsch books making it a good read-aloud story. There isn’t a lot to the story other than Cassandra’s trying to be in school all the time, and the ending feels a little weird with a school getting built in Cassandra’s backyard, but perhaps this strangeness will make it a hit with children. Whamond’s illustrations are fun and detailed, and so there is allot to look at. The illustrations include hilarious elements in the background, such as the school’s hamster helping Cassandra colour and build things,
School Rules! may be a favourite for kids that love school or all things Munsch, but it’s definitely a book to read aloud so silly voices can be done.
