Connor McDavid
When Connor was just three years old, he asked his mother to sew a “C” on his T-shirts. At first she thought it was because his name started with C, but then he told her it was because all the good hockey players on television had a “C” on their jerseys, and he wanted one too. Together they cut out little Cs and his mother sewed them on his shirts. Maybe he was predicting his future.
A quick read, Connor McDavid is a laudatory biography that is essentially organized chronologically. The main text, which focuses on McDavid’s route to the National Hockey League, highlights that, because McDavid’s hockey skills were so superior to his age peers, he was consistently forced to play against opponents who were older and bigger than he, a situation that continued even into his first years in the NHL What distinguishes ,i>Connor McDavid from other hockey biographies is the practice of the “Amazing Hockey Stories” series to include four multi-page graphic novel-like sections that are interspersed among the text chapters. The reader-friendly main text is printed on a blue background, and the book includes numerous full-colour action photos of McDavid at various stages of his hockey career. A particularly delightful illustration is the reproduction of McDavid’s first hockey card that was produced when he was just six-years-old and playing for the Aurora Minor Hockey Association. A few of the text pages also contain a pair of “trivia” speech bubbles, with one containing a question and the other the answer, For example:
After Connor moved to Erie, who called and gave him a pep talk?
Wayne Gretzky
That Connor McDavid is a star player with the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers and is early in his career is sure to make this title a favorite read of young hockey fans.
