My Mad Hair Day
My Mad Hair Day
My name is Malie
and I H-A-T-E my curly hair!
This morning when I woke up it was wilder
than ever.
It was a huge tangled mess!
My Mad Hair Day, by Nathalie Dion, tells the story of a young girl, Malie, who struggles with accepting her curly hair. She feels as if her curls cause nothing but trouble wherever she goes – from making a mess at the bakery to attracting all kinds of wildlife. It is only after she takes a time-out and meets another young girl with curly hair that she does begin to appreciate her own. In a short and simple way, My Mad Hair Day delivers a message of self-acceptance. Sometimes, we do not accept or appreciate what we have until we step back and see its beauty on another. My Mad Hair Day is a story that those with curly hair can relate to and is drawn from the author’s personal experience.
The book is illustrated beautifully, true to Nathalie Dion’s style. Her minimal colour palette helps to highlight the movement of Malie’s hair in the story. Nathalie Dion has illustrated many books on important topics, Fontaine’s The Big Bad Wolf in My House being an exceptional one. My Mad Hair Day is the first book that Dion has both written and illustrated.
