Amazing Atlantic Canadian Women: Fascinating Stories of Excellence and Determination
Amazing Atlantic Canadian Women: Fascinating Stories of Excellence and Determination
It was very rare for a woman to own a business at that time- even rare for that business to rely on physical labour and spending time at the dock where mostly men worked. But Rose seemed fearless, and soon became a kind of community police officer, ruling over the rowdy men and boys at the dock and keeping their behaviour in check-she even created and enforced curfews to help keep the peace. Because she was strong, confident, and trustworthy, she had little competition in town, and commanded plenty of respect.
Rose also participated in helping enslaved Black people find their way to freedom on the Underground Railroad, by transporting them to safe places.
Her descendants continued to run her transport business, and her direct descendant, Daurene Lewis (see page 138), became the first Black woman in Canada to be elected mayor when she became mayor of Annapolis Royal in 1984.
Building on Amazing Black Atlantic Canadians: Inspiring Stories of Courage and Achievement, Amazing Atlantic Canadian Women: Fascinating Stories of Excellence and Determination introduces readers to a diverse group of Atlantic Canadian women who achieved great things in their lives, often overcoming multiple obstacles along the way. From Rose Fortune, born in 1774, who is believed to be the first policewoman in Canada, to Stella Bowles, an environmental activist born in 2004, each biography tells the story of that woman’s unique path, planned and unplanned, to creating change and inspiring others.
In addition to a detailed index, biographies are organized in the table of contents under the headings Arts and Culture, Business and Media, Science and Tech, Community and Education, Sports and Adventure, and Politics and Activism. The table of contents helps readers find an interview that aligns with their interests and provides the inspiration they need. An extensive reference list offers readers further reading for each biography, encouraging readers to learn more about the individuals included in the book.
Each section of the book opens with quotes selected from the biographies which are included in it, thereby acting as hook to grab the attention of readers. Biographies open with hand-drawn images of the individual, putting a face to each entry. In select biographies throughout the book, additional information stands out in coloured boxes while words found in the glossary are bolded.
Whether these women intended to become activists or their small actions drew attention and accolades, the women included in Amazing Atlantic Canadian Women: Fascinating Stories of Excellence and Determination are excellent examples of how individuals can do great things, create lasting change, and inspire others to fight injustice. These vignettes, each a few pages long, would be perfect for encouraging reading habits in reluctant readers for whom ‘just one’ will quickly turn into ‘just one more’! The format is also perfect for reading together and for creating discussions in the classroom and at home. With the book’s including women from the past to those active today, readers of all genders will find themselves asking, “If they can do it, why can’t I?”.
