Volume 10 Number 4. 1982 November. David Crane has a solid background in journalism, having written for a number of major Canadian newspapers. He is currently the economics editor for the Toronto Star. His background is demonstrated by the effective research and presentation of his ideas in Controlling Interest, which he states clearly and succinctly without a great deal of heavy verbal baggage. Information and evidence supporting his points are offered with care, after due regard for the reader's ability to use the data. The author has much to say and says it in such a manner as to be understood. Crane has a mission. He has undertaken to expose to Canadians the foolish misuse of our gas and oil resources. His examination of past practices shows that large multinational corporations have been siphoning off Canadian resources at a rapid rate, while returning very little substantive revenue to Canadians. Government policies have not adequately regulated these corporations, and in fact, have encouraged these practices in the guise of maintaining energy supplies. It is time, Crane says, that Canadians have controlling interest in the resource industries in Canada. Controlling Interest is up to date, dealing with critical energy issues of the 1980s. It is organized so that it presents the issues, studies their causes, and examines the implications. Extensive notes are provided for each chapter, although no overall bibliography is included.
