Volume 10 Number 4.
This competently written novel involves three women and a man whose lives are interwoven over a decade. Sherrill Westacott moves to New York to further her promising acting career, leaving behind fellow actor, Jamie Ferrara, a married man for whom she holds an infatuation. Sherrill marries, bears a son, and changes careers. Her success as a writer breaks up her marriage, and she returns to Toronto after ten years. Meanwhile, Jamie, divorced, has moved in with Anne Reynolds, a beautiful older woman who becomes severely depressed after their romance ends. Jamie continues his acting career in Montreal, but after several affairs, returns to Toronto and befriends Dene Whitmore, an unhappy young widow, and encourages her to become a talented professional photographer. Sherrill and Jamie, matured after years of unfortunate marriages and affairs, meet again and develop a deep and passionate relationship. The story climaxes in Halifax when they are trapped and almost die in a hotel fire. The fire also redirects the lives of Anne and Dene. The author, a former actress, lives in Toronto and Connecticut and has published sixteen novels. Her book will be enjoyed by readers of fairly explicit romances about women who become financially and professionally successful. Published in hardcover by McClelland and Stewart under the title The Marmalade Man.
