Volume 10 Number 4. 1982 November. Publications like the Dictionary of Canadian Biography are looked forward to with anticipation and delight. This seventh and longest volume in the series is no disappointment. Some 382 writers have contributed 586 biographies of individuals who died between 1880 and 1890. The subjects of these biographies range from the well known to the obscure. Among the former are Louis Kiel, Alexander Morris, Pitikwahanapiwiyin (Pound-maker), Francis Hincks, Sir Hugh Allan, and Suzanna Strickland (Moodie). A fascinating example of a less well-known individual could be Charles McKiernan, known as "Joe Beef." "He did not set out to get rich, but rather to make a reasonable profit while extending charity to the destitute." This story and many others are both stimulating and informative. An attempt is made to categorize the subjects of the biographies by providing an index of occupations (businessmen, politicians, etc.), and by indicating geographical area. The constant aim of the editors has been to provide "pleasure and profit," I think the results bear witness to success. Specific biographies may be consulted, different individuals in similar categories may be compared, or random selections may themselves prove pleasurable.
