Grades 11 and up. Reviewed by John D. Crawford. Volume 10 Number 4. 1982 November. This is the story of the protracted attempt to organize Baton's employees in Toronto as a trade union local. It is, to a large extent, allowed to proceed in strict chronological order. This last feature, coupled with much detail, enables the reader to experience the events, problems, and satisfactions of the campaign as they happen. Although the author played an important role in the union's campaign, her book still retains sufficient sense of objectivity to convince the reader that this is how it really was. The characters are not painted in black-and-white terms, and those villains who do emerge are not, as might be supposed, the members of the Eaton family, but rather the sycophants who sought their favour, in particular the Toronto press who put advertising revenue before principle in their coverage of the campaign. The book is written as a straightforward narrative, and yet a strong feeling of nostalgia comes through. This feeling is similar to that found in many war memoirs that describe situations in which people share a sense of commitment, motivation, and enthusiasm deriving from a common purpose. Many people can look back over their past life to a period that they might think of as the "good old/ bad old days" when problems and difficulties were more than offset by the comradeship and teamwork present. This engrossing memoir is a fond remembrance of things past written by someone who can feel justly proud of having played a part in a significant episode in modern Canadian history. This book is of particular value to students of the Canadian labour movement and could also prove of value to senior secondary school students and their teachers whose curricula includes such a topic.
