This first book of a planned series depicts the adventures of an old gnome, Bumble McBean, his wife, and their forest friends. Together with other woodland characters such as Buckwheat the rabbit and Bodie the beaver, Bumble becomes involved in such escapades as sailing a mushroom-cap boat, healing an injured wolf, and frightening some evil stoats from the beaver pond. The structure and style of The First Book of Bumble McBean is that of a storybook. The chapters can be read independently making it good bed-time reading. The narrative flows in a relaxed manner that aptly depicts the forest atmosphere and gentle character of the bordered text gives it a classical folklore appearance. However, the amateurish black-and-white illustrations detract somewhat from the presentation, although they are helpful in interpreting the text. The reading level is suitable for an intermediate reader, but the folklore content might lack appeal for that age group. This book fits better into the read-aloud category of stories for preschoolers and primary-grade children. The values emphasizing sharing, helping others, and friendship make this a good source of discussion between parent/adult and child. Janice Foster, Winnipeg, MB.
