Growing up in the forties, I was enthralled with the style of fantasy and science fiction found in this collection. Except for the last two stories, all are pre-World War II. This is not bad as long as you understand the difference between a Jules Verne and an Arthur Clarke, or a Jack London and a Margaret Laurence. All these stories are excellent; they come with the stamp of approval of time. Therein lies the rub. A discerning reader of modern stories might John Robert Colombo be upset with only two from the hands of today's writers, James Tiptree, Jr. and C.Q. Yarbro. One must be familiar with the background of the authors to be able to pick up on their publishing history. Some are well known, while others are not. I enjoyed these stories.
