This is a novel that gluts and sates with sensuous details—details of bodily functions and facets and feelings that entwine with details of sky and silver water and sun. Imagery invokes summer and ripeness, engorged flesh and fecundity. But the counterpoint is always there in symbol and reality: dysfunction, destruction, death. There is a balance between physical and philosophical, a mixture of consummation and confirmation, renunciation and rejection. Mounted in and around Kingston, the montage involves friends, couples, distance, celibacy, hatred, lust. This is a tale that teems: sensation, saturation.
