Drawing on his background as professor of history at the University of Toronto, author of numerous books and articles, and his association with the university's Centre for Industrial Relations, Dr. Morton has produced a very readable introduction to the Canadian labour movement. The book presents the history and the issues of this movement from its birth, the first half of the nineteenth century up to the present time. The usual documentary style of the history text is frequently interrupted by camera-eye views of factory scenes, union meetings, etc., which add a sense of being there and make the reader intimately aware of the issues, the in-fighting, and the atmosphere of the trade union movement. Numerous captioned photographs also effectively supplement the text. The book is well designed as a teaching or research tool for students from about the grade 7 level. Pertinent vocabulary is off-set in italics and explained in context. There is also a glossary and a chapter-by -chapter framework of questions for discussions.
