Grades 10 and up. Reviewed by Donna Kenwell. Volume 10 Number 4. 1982 November. The latest edition of Lemon-Aid, like the vehicles Edmonston criticizes, has been down-sized. Compared to the 1979 copy I had, this change in format has been most beneficial. The cars are listed by model, rather than by year, which had necessitated cross-referencing and needless duplication. Included this time is a section on trucks, vans, and jeeps, as well as the full complement of domestic and foreign cars. As with last year's edition of Canadian Used Car Guide* Edmonston uses the first third of the book for general consumer information. He provides a ten-item checklist to be considered when buying a car. Also included in this section are charts on costs, parts life and dealer service. An insurance company lists their best and worst models. Edmonston also examines accessories and their validity. For the remainder of the book, each model is given an introductory page, a chart of technical specifications, and a rusting diagram, concluding with a rec-omrnended/not recommended statement. The general classification (e.g. Ford compacts) is then given a "defect register" where common problems for specific models and years are listed. Imported cars are dealt with in detail. In the case of Honda and Volvo, Edmonston goes to great lengths to specify what hazards exist. Edmonston claims that autumn 1982 will be the time to purchase 1981-82 cars. Armed with this book and hjs companion volume, Lemon Aid New Car Guide, any driver should feel confident in dealing with even the most aggressive car sales staff.
