With the publication of this volume, the Studies in Canadian Literature series expands to fifteen its analysis of important Canadian contributions to the field. The format of this volume makes it an easy reference to the complete works (to date) of Tremblay. In eight interesting chapters, Professor Usmiani critically studies his works, pointing out to the reader various patterns that emerge. She shows how he has resolved the difficulty of "quebecite'" versus universality through his themes of the bondage of family, alienation, and the necessary connection between freedom and responsibility. Following the text, notes indicate more precisely the source material used in the analysis. The bibliography lists Tremblay's opus under the captions: "Plays and First Productions," "English-Language Translations and First Productions," "Novels and Short Stories," "Adaptations/Translations," and "Works for Film and Television." "Secondary Sources" is more than adequate for the reader to acquire further background material on Tremblay and French-Canadian literature and culture. The format of this book also makes for easy reading. The print is clear and large with adequate margins. For the English reader, the author has provided excellent translations of various French passages quoted throughout the book. Usmiani has demonstrated her marvelous grasp of Tremblay's philosophical and political foundations. The history, struggle, fears, depression, and hope of the French-Canadian is told and retold throughout his opus. She pulls the pattern together for readers to feel and react to in their own personal experience. Tremblay has captured the social and political reality of an important part of Canadian life. For the reader who is interested in understanding the French-Canadian reality today, this book is required reading.
