Pre-School. Reviewed by Kate Inoue. Volume 10 Number 4. 1982 November. Mr. Dressup's book has been specifically written for parents of pre-schoolers and daycare workers. There are sixty-one creative activities divided into sections: things to make and do with paper, paint, and clay; toys and things; puppets, dolls and dressing up; things to make and do in the kitchen; making music. Some of the activities are well known: life-size colour cut-me-out, finger paint, milk-carton blocks, paper-bag puppet. A few are new to me: a paper loop game, tissue-box strummer. The beauty of the suggestions lies in the simplicity of the object, the ready availability of the materials—empty kleenex box, toilet-paper rolls, soap, string, paper—and the minimal adult supervision required. Children will be challenged to use their imagination in the use of the simple creation. The projects are printed one to a page, with more creative suggestions for their use at the beginning, other similar projects for older children or questions to involve the small creators in their project, then a list of materials needed, followed by instructions and often accompanied by an attractive line drawing featuring Mr. Dressup's show characters. This is an invaluable starter book for pre-school crafts. Parents would probably want their own copies, since it is an inexpensive paperback, although they, or day-care workers, might like to find it at the public library. Kate Inoue, Centennial Park E.
