Originally published in French in 1974 as Pi-Oui, Peewee follows Yves Lamy, a small ten-year-old boy, through his first peewee hockey season. It is Yves's determination and enthusiasm for hockey that enable him to become a member of the Eagles, a team in the peewee hockey league and experience many rink-related adventures. But it is more the off-ice experiences of Yves (nicknamed "Peewee") and his team mates that make the book suitable to its intended audience, regardless of gender. These experiences are described with humour and sensitivity and encompass the home and school environment, where the characters must deal with adults as well as peers. The setting and characters are unobtrusively French-Canadian; the characters are, for the most part, life like and believable in their range of emotions and personalities. The flowing style of the dialogue and the language are consistent with and appropriate to both the fast-moving pace of the story and the age of the intended audience. Martel obviously places a great emphasis on teamwork and fair play. In her zeal, she has used both the story and the character of Yves as vehicles for her stance, but it is done without deterring readers from enjoying the story.
