QUEBEC
Klaus Matthes and Mia Matthes.
Volume 10 Number 4.
Mia and Klaus are accomplished Canadian photographers, a husband-and-wife team who have several volumes of photography to their credit. Their work has been exhibited and acclaimed across Canada and internationally. Quebec is a celebration of the beauty of the province. It is a collection of nearly 200 colour photographs portraying Quebec's landscape, wildlife, architecture, and people. Mia and Klaus's photographic skills are apparent on every page. With impressive use of light and colour, they have captured the craggy shores of the St. Lawrence River, a mysterious Percé Rock shrouded in fog, and Quebec's autumn woods in a full blaze of oranges and yellows. People, flora and fauna, and buildings have been photographed with a sensitive and whimsical eye. Charming old farmhouses and the architecture of old Quebec City and Montreal are a contrast to such modern structures as Place des Arts and the Olympic Stadium, or the massive construction site at James Bay. Photos of frozen rivers, snow-buried houses, and frightening ice-covered cliffs at Montmorency Falls show the severity of a Quebec winter. The quality of the reproduction of the photos in Quebec is excellent. They are arranged in four sections, each of which covers a season. Photos within each section are attractively juxtaposed to contrast with and complement each other. Hugh MacLennan has written a brief introduction to the volume and a commentary to begin each section. His notes are brief and reflect the romantic mood of the photographs. His few interpretations are subjective and do not add significantly to the effect of the photos themselves. Captions appear at the beginning of each section, following MacLennan's comments. This collection is an intelligent arrangement of a series of stunning photographs that together portray the essence of the character of Quebec.
