Stamp, co-ordinator of Canadian studies at the University of Calgary, has compiled a rather dry study of the history of Ontario Schools. Pedagogic pasts do not lend themselves to pizazz. The past in this instance begins in 1876, as the author mostly ignores not only the thirty earlier years under Ryerson, but also the fledgling period from 1800 to 1846. In spite of the anachronisms of grade 13 and the general development of the educational system in this province both in isolation and behind the rest of Canada (the trendy recommendations of the Hall-Dennis Report antedated similar developments in other parts of Canada by half a decade or so), Stamp makes a good case for the identification, in Ontario, of an historically superior educational system in a North American context. Regrettably, at the above price, not many public schools will want to buy this book; its curricular appropriateness is not readily apparent. Vie Stecyk, Newtonbrook S. S., North York, ON.
