COOKING FOR ONE
Norah Mannion Wilmot.
Volume 11 Number 1.
This slim volume, originally published in 1970 and now in its eighth unrevised printing, contains 140 recipes that are grouped according to subject (twelve chapters). The author has attempted to address the concerns of the solitary diner by providing a minimal amount of general information (how to shop, etc.) and a varied selection of dull and simple recipes. The recipes, which do not contain metric equivalents, are unimaginative, and they rely on "cooking aids" such as Accent and instant mashed potatoes. They are confined to the more "traditional" foods-there are no lamb recipes and the vegetable offerings are sparse. The more serious cook will find better books on this subject— The Solo Chef by Clery (Prentice-Hall, 1981); Gourmet Cooking For One (Or More) by Paris (Atheneum, 1968) contains 285 recipes; Woman's Day Cooking For One by Laber (Random House, 1978) contains 300 recipes.
