The first in a series of comedy/adventures featuring five Ontario teenagers. In this book, Roily, Tiger, Jim, Katie, and Alice unwittingly discover that truckers are illegally dumping chemical wastes in the river near their town. When evidence points to Tiger's stepfather as one of the prime suspects, Tiger runs away. The group is reunited in a dramatic, late-night confrontation with the truckers. Janes, the author of several other books for young people, writes crisply, building the adventure to his climax with skilful pacing and imaginative twists of plot. The characterization is not as strong. A gang of five is too large to allow much depth, while a number of the minor characters are annoyingly hackneyed. The format is suitable for the intended audience, but several well-placed illustrations would have done much to increase the book's appeal.
