EVERYWOMAN'S BOOK OF NUTRITION
Elizabeth Bright-See and Jane Hope.
Volume 11 Number 1.
Everywoman's Book of Nutrition is co-written by Jane Hope, a home economist and public relations consultant in the nutrition field, and Dr. Elizabeth Bright-See, a university professor, research nutritionist, and nutrition co-ordinator. The book explains in very readable style almost every current nutritional concern and issue of interest to today's female in every stage of her life cycle. The authors have approached such areas as nutrition for teenagers, pregnant women, children, families "on-the-go," career women, overweight women, and older women. They have also dealt with such topics as food additives and drugs such as alcohol, caffeine, smoking, and over-the-counter drugs. In all instances, nutritional requirements are discussed and general advice is given. The advice is sound, practical and not over sensationalized. It is written in a form acceptable to and readable by the lay person. Because of the multitude of issues dealt with, it is also an excellent reference for teachers of secondary students. The information is well-organized in nine chapters, each dealing with a different stage of the female life cycle. The book contains a table of contents as well as a general index. There are no illustrations, but the type is very easy to read. Within each chapter, good use is made of subheadings to facilitate the easy location of information. In my opinion, this book is one of the most readable and interesting books on nutrition that I have encountered for some time. The authors are realistic in their approach and friendly in their manner of writing. Their attitude is perhaps exemplified by the following quotation regarding dieting: "There's no point in letting a pound or two of fat dominate your whole life."
