Life Math will, when it is completed at three volumes and a teacher's guide in 1985, add another component to the well-received Ryerson Mathematics Program. It is somewhat difficult to assess this, the first volume to be released, without the volumes earlier in the sequence and the teacher's guide. However, Life Math 3 does make a positive impression. Its orientation is the application of mathematics to situations to which students can relate. The examples range from the use of buns in a fast-food restaurant to estimating wildlife populations from tagged samples. The topics and degree of difficulty appear to be suitable for the intended audience, junior and senior high school students in basic mathematics courses. The format and illustrations are good. There are numerous BASIC programs for students to run on microcomputers. Life Math 3 appears to be a useful addition to the mathematics texts available at this level.
