This is a fine book, a book to be read with care and savoured. Usher Caplan has approached the life and work of a unique Canadian literary figure thoroughly and respectfully. We appreciate many sides of Klein; we follow his career through triumph and adversity, from his precocious youth to the final years of solitude. We see the public speaker, editor, ghostwriter, politician, lawyer, scholar, novelist, poet, husband, father, son. We observe Klein's varied friendships with David Lewis and the socialists, with the millionaire Samuel Bronfman, with the modernist Preview poets such as F. R. Scott and P. K. Page and the rival radical First Statement poets such as Irving Lay ton, Louis Dudek, and Raymond Souster. We watch Klein develop against the context of Montreal, mastering in English his native Jewish idiom and the enduring culture of French Canada.

Caplan has clearly read Klein with sympathy and zeal. He has studied his subject as a graduate student in Montreal and in New York. He has played a major role in arranging the Klein collection in the Public Archives of Canada and has interviewed dozens of Klein's acquaintances. In this volume, he has assimilated his copious findings in lucid, fluid prose.

Like One That Dreamed is substantially bound, well designed, indexed, illustrated with numerous photographs and excellent sketches by Ernest Neumann of Klein and his family. A foreword by Leon Edel is appropriate; Edel was Klein's classmate, a fellow scholar, and a lifelong friend. A major positive feature is the generous interspersing of autobiographical material from Klein's own published and unpublished works.

This book is stiffly priced. I recommend it anyway.
