Volume 11 Number 1. 1983 January. This bed-time story for the pre-school set is all about nap time. The little boy was sleepy, but he did not want to sleep. And so he cried until his tears filled the room, and his bed began to float around. He floated down the river and out to sea where the birds and fishes came to see what was going on. They played with him, swimming, diving, jumping "under the covers and over the waves until the liitle boy fell asleep." His mother heard him fall asleep (!!) and came for him, towing him home with her boat. The author has done black-and-white and blue drawings in imitation childish style. There are big, lumpy bodies and stick legs. It seems to work; the very simple reassuring story and the childlike drawings make a quiet bed-time story to put on the shelves beside Good-Night Moon, The Runaway Bunny, and some of Zolotow's books. Children will enjoy looking at the book after they wake up, too. They can identify the octopus, turtle, crab and fish, and they will relate to the boy who managed to have his nap and his play time too. The drawings are appealing with all those blue tears and the little boy kicking his legs as he cries. I appreciate the fact that this book is well designed for reading aloud, with the words fitting the illustration on each page. A good buy. Margaret Montgomery, West Vemon E. S., Vernon, BC.
