Florence McNeil has nine books to her credit. Her first attempt at young adult fiction did not hold my attention. The plot delivers a message that at times overshadows the characterization. Set in a Catholic girls' school, Miss P and Me is the story of Janie who wants to be a dancer like her mother. Initially chosen for a dancing part in the school production, she is replaced because of clumsiness. To get revenge on the teacher, Janie steals a prized photo from her office. Through the help of her English teacher, Janie takes responsibility for her mistake and decides to concentrate on her real talent for creative writing. The bright cover design, large print, and character dialogue are suited to a grade 5 audience. Janie is thirteen, however, and this discrepancy contributes to a lack of authenticity in both the main character and her reactions. She seems younger than her stated age. More complexity is needed to reflect the sophistication of early teen years. With careful editing and the addition of illustrations, Miss P and Me could provide a useful addition to the high interest/ low vocabulary section of the library. Reactions to the book from students sampled was lukewarm. This book can be recommended with the above reservations and not for collections with a limited budget. Donna O'Connor, Martensville H.
