The Patriots is similar in all respects to its predecessors in The Canadians series. It picks up the fortunes of the Nowell family in the 1780s and carries them through to the early days of the War of 1812. Stephen Nowell's children now dominate the scene, and his grandchildren are not far behind. The Patriots carries the Nowell family from the United States to Canada, showing their divided loyalties most clearly at the outbreak of the War of 1812. Family rivalries, religious differences, love, lust, and violence all contribute to the fast pace of the novel, as they did to the earlier title in the series. As in previous volumes, real historical figures mingle in a realistic manner with Wall's fictional characters. Wall maintains his grasp on historical accuracy, without sacrificing the storyline. For readers who like their history well laced with adventure, danger, and romance, The Canadians series is recommended. All the books of the series to date share the advantages and disadvantages of this genre.
