SINCLAIR ROSS: A READER'S GUIDE
Ken Mitchell.
Volume 11 Number 1.
Libraries in schools offering Canadian literature courses will be most interested in acquiring this analysis of the work of Sinclair Ross. Mitchell presents an easily readable discussion of Ross's short stories and four of his novels: As For Me and My House, The Well, Whir of Gold, and Sawbones Memorial. Also included is a chronology of Ross's life, a selected bibliography, and facsimile pages of manuscript. I am left with two unanswered questions about this reader's guide: ' (1) Why did Mitchell choose to include two Ross short stories? No explanation for their selection or inclusion is immediately apparent. (2) Why is there no extensive biographical information on Ross? A scant one-page life chronology and a blurb on the back cover are quite inadequate, I think. A reader's guide, it seems to me, should give us some insight into the author as well as his work. Recommended for high school libraries wherever CanLit courses are taught or wherever there is a demand for information on Canadian authors and their works.
