This novel has the ingredients for mystery, suspense, and terror. It is set in rural Ontario, probably on the Lake Erie shoreline, and depicts that area, and the small town therein, as having slept on old and dangerous secrets. An abnormally high proportion of the local population seems to be mentally subnormal, and the rest are careful not to disturb the precarious balance of forces.

Into this milieu comes Collin McPhee, returning to the scene of his childhood to find the answers to questions that are sure to cause trouble. His presence brings out the worst in many people, and the reader experiences a good deal of terror and suspense before the end of the story. Recommended for mature readers.
