Rob Kelley, instructor of computer studies in Hamilton, Ontario, has designed this introductory text to serve the needs of both general and advanced level students in a first and second year course in computers. Each chapter begins with a list of objectives and a quotation. Chapters are broken down with bold headings and subheadings and are heavily interspersed with examples, charts, diagrams, photos, and cartoons. The use of red print highlights the effective layout of the text.

The eighteen chapters cover programming, hardware, software, structured languages, societal impact, and computer applications. A variety of problem solving and planning techniques are outlined with sample applications and assignments. Each chapter has a summary, review questions, advanced level questions, group and individual projects, and issues for discussion. Terminology is highlighted in bold print. A glossary explains many terms, and in the index, bold-face page numbers indicate where terms are explained or defined, and italics locate illustrations.

The computer studies teachers in our school like this text. It is designed so that chapters may be selected in the sequence needed. It should also make a useful reference in the library; although bibliographical references are minimal, there is a wealth of assignment ideas for students and teachers.
