Using the idea that Canadian history (or any history) can be interesting, this contribution to the Kids Canada series concerns the cholera epidemic in Montreal during the 1800s. Generally speaking, the story revolves around an immigrant family from Glasgow, who land in Montreal in the midst of the epidemic. Yet the author, Bilson, goes further than simply describing the ravages of the illness on the people and the city, he also attempts to recreate, for the reader, the scene facing all new immigrants to Canada during the late nineteenth century, the shady characters and the more unscrupulous deals. Because the book is an easy read, it would be particularly appealing to young people who find history uninteresting. However, because of this very ease, this title could only supplement a more intense study of this period in history: the descriptions are too simplistic and the social issues are not discussed in any detail.
