EARLY SETTLER STORYBOOK
Bobbie Kalman.
Volume 11 Number 2.
The Early Settler Storybook is another in the Early Settler Life series. It would be useful in school libraries to supplement the many Canadian pioneer units that are taught at various grade levels. Its authenticity and flavour would help to counteract some of the glamour of pioneer life that children are exposed to. While it is fun for them to make bread, cornhusk dolls, and so on, many children of today do not really get the sense of the hardships of every day life long ago. This title shows that point of view, as well as giving examples of the art, poetry, and teaching of the times. Teachers could make good use of the book, and after an introduction, most children would be tempted to browse through it and read at least the parts where an illustration catches their fancy.
