FOOD FOR THE SETTLER
Bobbie Kalman.
Volume 11 Number 2.
Food for the Settler from the Early Settler Life series is described as a food odyssey that begins with the food of the first pioneers in the bush and progresses to that of the farming pioneers and finally into the food of the settler's world of plenty. It is a rather unusual cookbook, the recipes of which are compiled from old cookbooks, magazines, or settler's diaries. Introducing the recipes is a brief historical background. All recipes have been tested and some have been changed to suit the present-day kitchen. The recipes in italics are original and unchanged. Old-fashioned bread and butter making are explored. The early kitchen and kitchen gadgets are pictured and described. A glimpse into the past reveals the strict rules of behaviour at the table. Progress is traced through food from the wild to food from the store, which was promoted through some of the earliest advertising. A simple text together with a glossary and index, this title will provide a useful resource for early Canadian studies. Brown illustrations on cream coloured pages transport one back in time.
