The history of cast and wrought iron in Canada, from the seventeenth century to the present is traced in this work by Eric Arthur and Thomas Ritchie. Eric Arthur, professor emeritus in the department of architecture at the University of Toronto is the author of several books, including Toronto: No Mean City (University of Toronto Press, 1964). Thomas Ritchie has numerous articles and the book, Canada Builds, 1867-1967 (University of Toronto Press, 1967), to his credit. Together, they have provided us with an introduction to iron, its preparation,. formation, applications, and decorative properties, and uses. Primarily Canadian in focus, the work is enhanced by a wonderful collection of 250 black-and-white photographs. The easy-to-read text is off-set by four photo essays interspersed throughout the volume. Also included, is an index and bibliography, as well as a short glossary of terms—useful to the uninitiated. The ground covered is large. Examined are: kitchen utensils, gates, grilles and gratings, stairs, ships and spits, and hinges, hardware, and handrails, to name a few.
