DAMBUILDERS MAKE LOGGING COMPANY REPLANT FOREST! Conservationists will be delighted with this melodramatic tale of an eastern beaver heroine visiting British Columbia on a vacation and finding all the trees on the mountains cut down by a logging company. Thankfully, a helpful woman logger, Mash Mouth Jo, organizes their awareness into a protest river damming. It works! The evil sawmill owner relents and the beaver cousins plant amazingly fast-growing trees. This fanciful tale of an eastern do-gooder is merely a thin veneer masking a direct persuasive ploy reeking of feminism and conservationism. What's next of Ms Beaver's agenda? The MX missiles in Wyoming? The gas well leak in Alberta? The pipeline in the North? How wonderful to have such a beast solve all our problems so simply and quickly. One dam does it! Canadian children deserve more than this glossy over-simplistic view. They have a right to be respected as readers, to have a basic honesty presented in their books, to share characters that are real and not merely didactic shadows, to appreciate quality illustrations that portray the mood of the story rather than cute adult outline, as well as to have a basic good story.
