The dramatic story of a Montreal family— its
traumas and its triumphs— from the Crash of
'29 through World War II to the turbulent
Sixties. . James Munroe-Proud, ruthless, and
hungry for power, yet haunted by the memory
of a partner he once betrayed and of a woman
         he once loved.

These cover blurbs pretty well say it all about this novel, based on the CBC TV series of the same name written by Douglas Bowie. The book describes the rise of James Munroe and the growth of his corporate empire in broad sweeps, mainly using stereotypes. There are few surprises, as the plot progresses in predictable pot-boiler fashion. It clearly is an adaptation from television and adds little to our understanding of the characters in the series.

Still, it is an easy read and will be enjoyed by readers who enjoyed the television series, who are probably the audience for whom it is intended.
