HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA: THE 1982-83 SEASON
George Gross.
Volume 11 Number 3.
He shoots, he scores! For any hockey fan in Canada, this phrase, made famous by Foster Hewitt, whom many consider to be the inventor of Canadian hockey broadcasts, brings to mind Saturday night and mid-week hockey programs. In George Gross's book Hockey Night in Canada: The 1982-83 Season, the people before and behind the television cameras are profiled. Gross provides fascinating details of the people, whose names and titles are listed in the credits at the end of each show, and their responsibilities. Not only are the interviewers and colour commentators such as Gary Dornhoefer discussed but also the role of the Executive Producer, Ralph Mellanby, for example is explained. And what hockey book would be complete without some mention of Wayne Gretzky! Besides this brief profile of the Great Gretzky, Gross mentions all of the other hockey players whom Gross terms "hockey giants" and rookies in a chapter devoted to these topics. Finally, there is a portrait of each National Hockey League team: outlook, draft picks, coach, individual team member statistics, rink dimensions. Hockey Night in Canada is recommended for hockey fans of all ages.
