Canadian concern on sex-role stereotyping in broadcasting has been evident for some time and not only amongst radical equal rights advocates. The Canadian government and the advertising industry have been studying the problem. In 1976, the advertising industry set up its own task force and provided guidelines for creators and publishers of advertising, which, however, went largely unheeded, according to concerned groups. In 1979, the federal government through its minister of communications, the Honourable Jeanne Sauvé, requested that the CRTC establish a task force on sex role stereotyping in the broadcast media. Images of Women is the report of this nineteen-member task force. The task force met at six public meetings and heard from over fifty people whose summarized briefs are presented in the report. Most of the briefs objected to the representation of women in the media, but a few, particularly those submitted by companies, objected to the task force's work because they do not see sex-role stereotyping as a problem but as an attempt to change society's attitudes and as an attempt at censorship. The body of the report is actually only seventy-seven pages of widely spaced paragraphs and lists. Pages 79 to 189 contain footnotes, appendices, and bibliography. The report, however, contains a clear summary of the problem as seen by a wide number of groups, and recommendations are given to solve the problem as seen by the members of the task force. Images of Women will be of use in the school library for student research into the changing role of women in society and the portrayal of that role in Canadian media.
