This story, set in Saskatchewan, is a skilful blend of realism and fantasy. Cathy, "a red-haired wisp of a girl," meets an unhappy dragon while gathering Saskatoon berries. The dragon is a gentle creature who has lost his flame. Cathy plays on the prairie, attends a dance at the school, and finally through her love and bravery Alfred's flame is rekindled and he returns to Dragonland. The illustrations are colourful and relate well to the fantasy elements in the story. This story should appeal to children who are interested in dragons and monsters.
