If Jack and Julia hadn't been telepathic, the others would not have overheard them "talking" about what they had seen in the cave. This special ability turns into a real asset as the twins uncover the mystery of the strange lights, and Julia undertakes a mission for the alien beings. Set in the Canadian Rockies amidst a wilderness field trip, the plot unfolds quite plausibly, and its inclusion of the fantastic is very effective. Like other young adult novels by Monica Hughes, the main characters are well developed, showing a range of feelings teenagers can identify with. Important contributions by both Jack and Juila should satisfy the reading preferences of students of both sexes. Fast-paced, with lots of action, the book holds reader interest throughout. The format of Beckoning Lights will tempt even the reluctant readers. Full-page, pencil sketch illustrations and large, clear print are appealing.
