In Denmark she lived in the country and could ride her bicycle back and forth to school every day without the dangers of Vancouver traffic. Pam named her Danish bicycle Dusty and pretended it was a horse. When she discovered that she would have to leave Dusty behind on the return to Vancouver, Pam was heartbroken. She lovingly cleaned and polished Dusty and arranged for it to be given to a new owner. As a final token of her feelings, she left a poetic tribute under the bicycle seat. Months later, back in Canada, this final gesture brought her a new Danish friend. Most children in grades 3 to 5 will probably enjoy this short, colourful book. Many will be able to identify with Pam's love for her bicycle and her pleasure in pretending it is a horse. A few may ponder the questions of why Pam has no language problem in the Danish school and why she seems to have made no friends except her bicycle.
