ON RUSTICO SHORE
Marjorie Hooper Dalziel.
Volume 11 Number 4.
Marjorie Dalziel's first novel, On Rustico Shore, is an interesting romance about a shipwreck off Rustico, P.E.I., in the mid-nineteenth century. The story opens with the shipwreck and follows through on how that event affects the lives of the central family, the MacDonalds, and their neighbours. As a historical romance, it presents a fair, if incomplete, view of Island pioneer life. As fiction, its characters are rather too predictable, its plot too studied, and its style too direct. Still, it is quite unlike much of the popular trash that circulates as good literature these days, and as such it has a quiet charm all its own.
