He logged some four thousand hours as navigator and instructor on long range routes. Resigning in 1966, he entered private business, and thirteen years later struck out on his own as a freelance artist. Painting Planes is essentially a collection of thirty-five paintings of aircraft by the author, all with extensive, informative captions offering historical, technical, and artistic data. As a sort of bonus, though it makes up about half of this slim book's content, the text is a lay person's guide into the mysteries of the profession of aviation artist. The author takes us through the various stages in the birth of a masterpiece, from conception, through technical and historical research, choice of materials, agonies of decision, to the final polished result. The paintings are magnificent, and the text informative. This book is a must for all art libraries and is a joy to all lovers of airborne creations. Alfred F. Greenwood, Victoria, BC.
