Professor Landes, of St. Mary's University, wrote this book to compensate for the lack of available teaching materials for introductory university courses in political science. He has fulfilled his task completely. It is no longer necessary to buy a whole stack of small—but expensive—paperback texts for Poli Sci 10. The Canadian Polity introduces the concepts and analytical tools of political science, then uses them, first to survey Canadian politics and government, then to look more briefly at the British and American experiences (thus the subtitle). The nature of politics and government, political institutions, and political processes are all discussed in major sections of the book. The text is rather heavy reading at several points, but this should not be a problem when it is read carefully, one chapter at a time, as would be the case in a university course. Librarians might also purchase this book for its clear explanation of the nature of political science, as well as for its thorough analysis of the new Constitution. David Remski, Madonna H.
