Eleven Exiles is an account of the American Revolution, focusing on eleven different people who left the colonies and made new lives for themselves in what remained of British North America. It reflects their attitudes toward social and political ideas of the time, their motivation in moving from established homes to wilderness environments, as well as the challenge and hardship they found. The exiles selected for inclusion in the book are John Howe, Francis Green, Joseph Durfee, Molly Brant, Ward Chipman, William Schurman, Sir John Johnson, Ranna Cossit, Sarah Sherwood, Boston King, and William Jarvis. The editors are Phyllis Blakeley who is archivist at the Public Archives of Nova Scotia, and John Grant who is a research associate at the Atlantic Institute of Education. The biographies have been written specifically for this publication by a num- ber of authors, many of whom have reputations from their previous works on the Loyalists. Eleven Exiles contains maps, notes, illustrations, bibliographies, an extensive chronology and an index. The type is large and easy to read.
