EXPLORING OTTAWA
Harold Kalman and John Roaf.
Volume 11 Number 5.
After collaborating on Exploring Vancouver, published in 1974, Harold Kalman and John Roaf have combined efforts once again to produce Exploring Ottawa. Kalman, a resident of Ottawa, is a consultant in the history and conservation of architecture. After graduating in art history at Princeton, he taught at the University of British Columbia. During this period in Vancouver, he completed the Gastown-Chinatown Architectural-Historical Study and the Waterfront Planning Study. John Roaf, an internationally acclaimed architectural photographer, is responsible for the photographs included in this guide. As the title implies, the focus is on the architecture, landscape, and city-planning of Ottawa. Of the ten tours included in this guide, the first five are intended for walking and cover the Parliamentary Precinct, Lower Town, Centretown, Sandy HOI, and finally, Hull and the Chaudiere. The next two tours, designed for cycling, explore the Rideau Canal (wonderful for skating in winter) and New Edinburgh and Rockcliffe Park. The final three areas, the West End, Ottawa East and South, and the Gatineau, cover more ground and are best enjoyed by car. Each tour takes approximately one and a half to two and a half hours to complete. Each tour begins with a map and an introduction that outlines the history and development of the area. Special features are pointed out, such as museums, restaurants, picnic grounds, etc. The buildings to be highlighted on each tour are given a brief description, accompanied by a black-and-white photograph. The guide is well-organized, the layout excellent, the descriptions clear and concise and the buildings easily recognized from the photographs provided. Includes index. Anyone interested in learning more about the nation's capital is urged to try this guide. Recommended.
