LOTIONS, POTIONS AND LINIMENTS PURE: A LOOK AT THE DRUG TRADE IN WINNIPEG IN THE 1900s
Joseph E. Wilder.
Volume 11 Number 5.
A first-hand account of a pharmacist's life in Winnipeg during the first half of the twentieth century. Short anecdotes relay events around an important commercial centre in urban life, the drug store, where long hours of service and the handling of many essential supplies make it a centre of life for its neighbourhood. Unexpected emergencies, a motley collection of customers, its role as telephone centre for the community in the early years, and changing marketing styles, made the neighbourhood pharmacy a hub of life from year to year. Many sidelights on everyday life in the city make this a nostalgic trip through the period, with commentary on the effects on society of new inventions or changing styles of business.
