Political Life in Canada attempts to deal with politics in our daily lives. The authors go from the need for politics in small groups to large countries, from the need for laws to the administration of them. They use many examples and many illustrations to help in their explanations of their text. Each chapter has questions and activities interspersed throughout categorized under headings: "locating and understanding ideas," "arranging and analysing ideas," and "evaluating ideas and opinions." There are enough activities for a teacher to be able to pick and choose among them.The wide margins are used for the explanation and definition of terms and ideas. A glossary in the back also provides definitions. The extensive table of contents for the twelve chapters is close to three pages long; as a result, the index is short. If the book can be faulted, it is that it does not adequately cover the judicial function of government, while it does a reasonable job of both the legislative and executive functions. The Senate appears to exist solely for the purpose of passing the bills from the House of Commons through another three readings. Political Life in Canada will prove useful for the latter grades in junior high or lower senior high. Teachers should also be prepared to be selective in their use of the entire book.
