SUBJECT INDEX FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE TO CANADIAN POETRY IN ENGLISH
Esther Gorosh, Margaret Harper and Kathleen M. Snow.
Volume 11 Number 5.
The introduction to this index explains that the seventy books analysed are collections of Canadian poetry listed as in print for the years 1976 to 1980. The selectors chose them because they contained five or more poems with appeal for young people between the ages of six and fourteen. Subject headings used are, for the most part, from Subject Index to Poetry for Children and Young People by V. Sell and others, the Children's Catalogue, and Canadian Subject Headings. "See" and "see also" references are used liberally. For example, the entry under ALBERTA reads "see also HUMOUR - ALBERTA; place names of Alberta, e.g., CALGARY -ALBERTA." Incidentally, there are ninety-seven entries under HUMOUR. The poems were chosen on the bases of subject matter, level of language and concept, and for their rhythm and imagery. The compilers consulted Canadian school curricula to determine the interests of children and young people. For this reason the index will prove indispensable in school libraries and will be a welcome addition to public library reference shelves. Highly recommended.
